Rising Stars: Buck Winfrey

Parkview Baptist High School

You don’t typically think of football players standing over 6 feet tall and weighing in at 290 pounds as being super versatile, but Buck Winfrey has proven that he is the exception to the norm.

The standout sophomore for Parkview Baptist has played on both sides of the ball for the Eagles, slotting in at both offensive guard and defensive nose tackle. Winfrey likes to study the game of the NFL elites—like three-time First-team All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson of the Indianapolis Colts—and apply some of their traits to his game.

“His aggressiveness and his technique and his skills are really there,” Winfrey says. “You can see it. It’s in your face every time you watch him play.”

Winfrey said he likes to channel that same aggressive nature when he hits the field. He’s got a pre-game playlist that helps get his mind right, but he’ll be the first to tell you that there’s no substitute for a good week of practice.

“That’s always how it goes for anything, regardless of what you do,” he says. “Because you’ve got to have good practices to have a good game. So that’s where it starts for me, and I think that’s where it starts for a lot of my teammates as well. Just stacking good days on top of each other. Then when it comes to game day, just replay the game in your head over and over. Think about what you have to do to succeed as a team and individually to win the game.”

It’s no wonder more and more eyes continue to focus on big No. 70 for Parkview.
