Apps to get your outdoor adventure started

Pocket Ranger

This app partnered with Louisiana State Parks for a free official guide that lets you pull up information on parks nearby, track your hiking or biking route and even save terrain maps in case you lose mobile reception in the woods. iOS users, search “Pocket Ranger Louisiana” in your App Store; get the Android version on Google Play.

MyTreeMyTree Baton Rouge

In April, the non-profit Baton Rouge Green launched a new website to help residents identify and plot trees in their own backyards and neighborhoods and discover their eco-benefits to the urban environment. Through an online map and a partnership with the Open Tree Map app, MyTreeBR shows all the “heavy lifting” different types of trees do for us, says Baton Rouge Green program director Robert Seemann. That’s everything from reducing stormwater runoff to retaining carbon dioxide to conserving energy (by shading your house). The new service just might make you want to plant another tree in its honor. mytreebr.org
