David St. Romain – Nashville Star

For Baton rouge musician David St. Romain, reality TV was a revelation of what matters in life.

In 2007, the country crooner landed a spot in the finals of Nashville Star on the USA Network. After a 40-city national tour with fellow Nashville Star competitors, St. Romain cut his first album in Nashville on his own independent label. But in the wake of the show, St. Romain feels his stars have aligned in a different direction.

“I realized it’s not necessarily what I want,” he says.

For a man who’d rather perform for the troops than walk the red carpet, life in front of the camera has little appeal. He recalls conversations with Jewel and Cowboy Troy reminding him that the show was not his career, but simply a stepping-stone.

St. Romain now plays gigs around the Baton Rouge area and plans to release a new album later this year, this time recorded in a studio he built himself. He says his new direction is less country and more of a singer-songwriter-with-Louisiana-roots sound. St. Romain believes he’s finally found his true voice as a musician.

“My priorities in life have changed majorly,” he says. “I’m 36 now. I was 29 then, and I felt like I could still get out there and conquer country music. I thought that was the goal. I’ve really grown as a man, as a father, and as an artist, because I’m not as interested in whether or not everyone loves me. It’s not as important to me anymore as it is that I’m doing what God put me here to do. davidstromain.com
