Summer 2016 restaurant outlook: Latest on Baton Rouge restaurants and bars

Olive or Twist begins expansion into neighboring space

The craft cocktail bar Olive or Twist has begun construction to expand its footprint within the Perkins Palms shopping center. Co-owner Scott Gremillion tells 225 Dine the bar has recently started renovating and updating its current space—including a revamped bar top—and is remodeling the neighboring space formerly occupied by Painting and Pinot.

The expansion will allow the bar to offer a full-service restaurant experience across the connected spaces, under the guidance of executive chef Richard Markert.

Gremillion says it’s too early to set a timeline on when the expansion will be complete, but it is not expected to disrupt normal operating hours. Painting and Pinot, meanwhile, has relocated to another location within Perkins Palms.

The Overpass Merchant hosts grand opening

Though it’s been dishing out food and drinks since March, the new kid on the Perkins overpass block hasn’t been firing on all cylinders until now. The grand opening kicks off Saturday, June 11, at noon with live music on the patio, full kitchen service, brewery giveaways, a screening of the LSU baseball game and specials on the restaurant’s signature Merchant Mule.

The gastropub will also partner with New Belgium Brewery for the day to celebrate 25 years of Fat Tire with all five of the label’s Fat Tire & Friends collaboration brews on tap.

Dearman’s plans reopening later this year

Dearman’s, which has been closed since early March after a late-night fire damaged the restaurant, has reached an agreement on a new lease with the Bocage Village Shopping Center. This ends the three months of uncertainty over the future of the beloved diner.

The agreement is a new five-year lease that allows the restaurant to reopen once renovations and repairs are completed. While it is too soon to say exactly when the restaurant will reopen, Dearman’s owner David Van Gelder aims for it to be ready by September.
