Think Twice Style: Days of Rain

Trust me … we can all agree that we are over this daily torrential downpour. Over. It.

However, if we must put up with it until the end of time—please no—we might as well look good trudging through puddles in parking lots!

Let’s start with a basic shift dress. The shape is flattering no matter how many popsicles you downed over the weekend, and a cotton fabric will dry quickly if you get caught in the storm. Find one in a color that makes you happy—something bright and sunny to lift your spirits out of the clouds.

This one works for all seasons. Slip a turtleneck underneath that baby and go at it in January! Next, your shoe selection is essential. Rain boots do not always have to be in cutesy prints or in a style that screams, “I am made for rain and ONLY rain!” A short Chelsea boot is an excellent compromise of function and fashion. A classic black or navy will work with any look in your closet. Bonus points if you get rubber soles for extra wear on your ski trip this winter. Man, that was two cold-weather references in a minute … it must be summer!

Accessorizing is key to avoiding the wet look. Grab a colorful scarf on your way out the door. Tie it around your neck, drape it over your raincoat for pizzazz, or stow it away in case you need to pull your hair up into a turban—because frizz.

Speaking of frizz: Coming from a girl who embraces her Big Hair Don’t Care blonde puff ball, hair care gets complicated this time of year. While I prefer the look of my hair with a little rain, that is not the case for everyone. Aveda’s Be Curly line has saved my life. The Curl Controller and Curl Enhancing hair spray are my top picks! I have no idea how they do it, but if a product takes me from TSwift circa 2006 to Kate Hudson with a quarter-sized dollop, I’m in.

An overcoat is an absolute must. A classic trench or cool poncho is equally as cool and functional. A crossbody bag will keep you hands-free when managing your car keys and an umbrella. Has anyone actually mastered the art of elegantly entering your car with an umbrella? Is there a class for that? The elephant-shaped purse is to keep your spirits high with the vitamin D deficiency. A clear umbrella is the epitome of cool. It exists, but is not seen. It is the invisible umbrella.

Now, you may say I am crazy for including sunglasses in rain gear, but the glare of the sun can be brutal in a downpour. Besides, we all know in Louisiana it can be sunny one second and a hurricane the next. You can never be too prepared.
