Whether it retains its developmental shape, with that warm, snaky strength of flow recalling the great bends and curves of the Mighty Mississippi itself is yet to be determined. But what is almost certain, even at the design stage, is its future place among the premier developments in the city.

This year Trahan gets to put his lucrative sports stadium work aside in favor of more inventive, design-heavy projects. With the Manship family’s property on River Road, he gets to position yet another strategic domino of modern design downtown.

“The idea is to question whether we as a city have built using the river and the location to inform the architecture,” he says of his dramatic design proposal. “To know that you can walk into a building every day and find a different experience because it has a certain spatial quality, I find that level of mystery exciting.”

Coupled with work on the fluid and functional Turner Industries office in Port Allen. and his first LEED-certified “green” building in the area, the future residential/retail/office development where The Advocate once stood will turn plenty of eyes to Trahan and his 15-member firm this year.

The renowned architect describes all of these projects with the youthful zeal of a Cub Scout obsessing over a model airplane, yet with the intellectual studiousness an engineer needs to get it done right.

“I’m interested in things that are initially imperceptible, but over time or distance—or both—become clearly distinguishable,” Trahan says of the little details, or “moves” as he calls them, that he likes to build into his firm’s work. “That’s really what we enjoy in relationships, when over time someone’s depth and uniqueness reveals itself.”

“Trey is a gifted designer, and [the Manship property] is a very exciting opportunity for the riverfront. … This project sets a new agenda for downtown. It’s a sign of the progressive nature of where we are headed as a community.” —Davis Rhorer, Downtown Development District executive director
