Unleashed: Yelp!BR hosts reunion and block party

Adrian Hirsh, pictured above, has the scoop on Yelp!BR’s weekend event.

Yelp!BR, hosts its third annual reunion and block party at BREC’s Forest Raising Cane’s Dog Park at 13900 South Harrell’s Ferry Road Sunday, April 26, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

“Last year, we had about 40 Yelp! alumni and their owners attend the reunion,” event coordinator Beverly Theriot says. “This year, we decided to make it a block party to encourage all Capital City dog owners to come.”

The event includes a blessing of the animals, Yelp!’s adoptable dogs, Magic Happens Rabbit Rescue, Louisiana Capital City Obedience Club, food trucks, live music, bake sale, balloon twister, face painting, prizes, online auction and flea market.

“We will have adoptable dogs at the event,” Theriot says. “However, [the event is] a fundraiser, so proceeds will go to helping us rescue and rehome lost, abandoned and neglected dogs of the Baton Rouge area.”

Community volunteers founded Yelp! in October 2009. In 2010, the non-profit opened the Yelp! house at 3205 Lanier Drive. There, the rescue cares for up to 50 dogs and puppies. Over the years, Yelp! has adopted approximately 2,000 dogs.

Creature Feature

Bailey unleashedRascal (with a white chest and bangs), age 8, and Bailey, age 9, are American cocker spaniels, who are a bonded pair and must be adopted together.

Ollie unleashedOllie is a sweet, 7-month-old wirehair terrier mix. While he is calm for his age, Ollie can also be playful when given the opportunity.

Velvet unleashedVelvet is a young, female shepherd/beagle mix.

Remy unleashedRemy is a sweet girl, who takes a little time to warm up to strangers. Because this Jack Russell mix is timid, she would do best in a home without small children.

Beck unleashedBeck is a 4-year-old blue tick beagle. He enjoys playing with toys and other dogs. (He just ignores cats.) Beck is a little timid, so he’s best suited to a home without small children. But, once he gets to know someone he is very affectionate. In fact, more than anything, he loves to be with his “person” no matter what that human is doing. But, he really appreciates his person taking time to teach him new tricks (because he is a very smart and a fast learner).

These dogs have all been vaccinated, spayed/neutered, microchipped and heartworm tested. Many other puppies and dogs are available at Yelp!BR.
