Happys5000 to feature 5K, beer mile, food and wine

The fifth annual Happys5000, a.k.a. the Downtown Spectacular 5000 Meter Road Race, kicks off Saturday at 5 p.m.

Scott Higgins with Happy’s Running Club calls it a “social sporting event.”

“It’s open to people of all skill levels,” he says. “We’re taking all the great things we have in Louisiana and incorporating it into the race. This event is for people who want to have a good time.”

The event mixes food, music, art and exercise and begins with open registration and music from Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue at North Boulevard’s Town Square. Registration is $30. The run starts at 6 p.m. at the intersection of North Fourth and Convention streets. A beer mile kicks off at 7:30 p.m. After the race, enjoy food, drinks and music from Remedy Krewe at 8 p.m. Among some of the food vendors are Fresh Junkie, Brew Ha-Ha, Schlittz & Giggles, Tsunami, Lucy’s Retired Surfer’s Bar and more. Awards will be given at 8:15 p.m., but don’t expect a drawn-out affair when it comes to doling out the acclaim.

“It’ll be a quick [awards] ceremony so we can get back to the music, beer and food,” he says. —Matthew Sigur
