Pioneering restaurateur Charles Brandt dies

Charles Henri Brandt, longtime Baton Rouge restaurateur and 2010 winner of the Baton Rouge Epicurean Society’s Grace “Mama” Marino Lifetime Achievement Award, passed away Tuesday night in San Diego, Calif., after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 86. Many Red Stick residents remember with fondness Brandt’s long-running European-style fine dining establishment, Chalet Brandt, the only Baton Rouge restaurant ever to win the four-star Mobil Guide Award for excellence in food, service and hospitality. The Swiss-born Brandt ran the establishment from 1973 until 1995, when he sold it to his son, Eric Brandt, who now operates Brandt’s Maisonette. Mr. Brandt’s funeral will take place in Switzerland, but the family plans to hold a memorial service for him in Baton Rouge in June.
