Think Twice Style: Well Suited – Penny Lane

Set mostly in 1973, the film Almost Famous is about a teenager, William, who lands an assignment writing for Rolling Stone. He grows up quickly while traveling with the fictitious band Stillwater on tour. William meets groupie Penny Lane early on in the story and she guides him along in the rock star lifestyle.

The costuming in Almost Famous is so well detailed that you will forget you are sitting on your couch in modern day. Penny Lane exudes bohemian. Her endless supply of perfectly worn-in denim and crochet tops is enough to make anyone jealous. The basic elements of any Penny Lane-inspired look are: fringe, lace, flora and flow.

For this look, I toned down an obviously Penny-inspired look. I started with a babydoll dress that has a touch of lace at the top. The shape easily makes it appear as if it’s from the early 1970s. Mini dress mania! Don a leather fringe jacket for prime dance-ability. Choose a showpiece for your jewels, or stack them on like crazy and make it an arm party. Remember to wear your highest platforms because, after all, it’s the ’70s.
