Fresh picks at the Baton Rouge farmers markets in October

‘Tis the season for kale, spinach and pumpkins at the farmers market

With cool October weather and the beginning of the holiday seasons comes a big change in produce at the Baton Rouge farmers markets.

Fall crops are beginning to show up and late-summer produce is nearing the end of its tenure.

Here’s what to look out for at the farmers markets this month:

Kale, snap beans, spinach, cabbage and lettuce are at the start of their seasons. These crops will show up this month and last through the start of winter.

Collard and mustard greens, squash and, of course, pumpkins, are at their prime this month. Root vegetables like sweet potatoes, radishes, carrots and turnips will also be widely available. October is the midpoint of the season for these crops, so be sure to pick some up.

Some summer favorites are fizzling out this month—watermelon, peas, okra and beans won’t show up much at the markets after October.

Beginning Oct. 6, The Red Stick Farmers Market is adding three new seasonal markets for the season.
