Dine Roundup: Philly Ice Express planned, La. native wins ‘Chopped Junior’ and more food news

Everything Philly to open Philly Ice Express

Ameen Walker, who opened his Philadelphia-style eatery Everything Philly near the north gates of the LSU campus earlier this year, is now planning shops focused on the eatery’s most popular item, Philly ice.

The frozen concoction, which is a soft-serve sorbet, has sold more than 8,000 units in the first four weeks alone. Walker now plans to open several freestanding Everything Philly: Philly Ice Express outlets around the metro area.

Walker recently leased a 3,200-square-foot warehouse on North Merchant Court, just off Exchequer Drive, that will house a walk-in freezer and all the equipment needed to make Philly Ice locally in bulk. He plans to open the first express location by the end of the year, and is hoping to open as many as five in 2017. Read more on Daily Report.

Louisiana native wins Chopped Junior

Mandeville sixth-grader Emily Roche won the Food Network cooking show competition Chopped Junior. She prevailed over three other adolescents in the three-course competition to win $10,000 and the chef’s coat.

After surviving two rounds of cuts to make it to the final, she competed against Zoe Gelsi of Montclair, New Jersey. The two had 30 minutes to make a dessert out of star fruit, lemonade, Bugles corn snacks and a rainbow tie-dyed cake. The Mandeville native’s Louisiana-inspired bread pudding won over Zoe’s cake crumble.

New Jimmy John’s opens on Jefferson Highway

Jimmy John’s has opened its fifth location in Baton Rouge, after months of renovating the old Mama Della’s pizza restaurant at 8190 Jefferson Highway.

The Illinois-based sandwich chain signed a contract earlier this year to lease the property and spent about three months transforming the building into a Jimmy John’s. The new location joins the other Jimmy John’s locations in Baton Rouge on West Lee Drive, Coursey Boulevard, Perkins Road and Third Street downtown.
