Dine Roundup: Fete Rouge and Mid City art hop a go this week, flood relief fundraisers, more food news

Fête Rouge vows to go on with events this week

Baton Rouge Epicurean Society president Dori Murvin released a statement Monday, Aug. 22, on its event site about Fête Rouge moving forward after the flooding:

“The Baton Rouge Epicurean Society consists of board members, chefs, wine and food purveyors, judges, volunteers, designers, printers, supply/staffing companies, and L’Auberge Casino & Hotel, who have all been heavily impacted by the storm on a business and personal level. Inspired by the community’s effort to respond and rebuild, individually and collectively, we are moving forward with our 10th year Fête Rouge. Baton Rouge is a resilient community and we will leverage the support of Fête Rouge attendees to help the recovery efforts.”

That includes all money raised on the last item of the live auction during the awards dinner Thursday, Aug. 25, going toward the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. That last item will be a one-of-a-kind painting of the awards dinner crowd by Alex Harvie and TJ Black.

Attendees to all Fête Rouge events will have the opportunity to donate to the food bank throughout both evenings, according to Murvin’s statement.

This year’s Fête Rouge events will include honoring Holly Clegg with the Baton Rouge Epicurean Society’s Grace “Mama” Marino Lifetime Achievement Award at its annual awards dinner Thursday, Aug. 25. Also included are the Fête du Vin, Fête Rouge’s premium tasting event, Friday, Aug. 26, 6-8 p.m., and Food & Wine Fête also on Friday, Aug. 26, 7-10 p.m.

New Rouses opens in Baton Rouge today

A new Rouses, the first in Baton Rouge, located at Village Market at the intersection of Antioch Road and Airline Highway, opened Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 8 a.m. According to a press release, crews were rushing to open the store to assist families in need of groceries and other supplies during flood recovery.

“I usually get such a kick out of watching people experience ‘their’ Rouses for the first time,” managing partner Donny Rouse said in a prepared statement. “People get so excited about everything we have to offer. But given the tragic circumstances, this opening has taken on a whole new meaning.”

The store will have a Louisiana seafood boiling room and made in-house Cajun specialties including fresh sausages in its sausage kitchen and smokehouse. Customers can also get meat barbecue-smoked on site, stir-fried food made to order, fresh sushi rolled in store and hot breakfast, lunch and dinner options.

Juban Crossing possibly reopening in 90 days

Developer Steve Keller hopes to have the Livingston Parish shopping center back in business within 90 days. All of the development’s tenants got between four and five feet of water when flooding engulfed Livingston Parish last weekend.

Juban Crossing opened in Livingston Parish, just east of Denham Springs, in 2015. Since its opening, the development has proven successful, attracting shoppers to plenty of restaurants, and big box stores like Belk, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Academy Sports, among others.
