Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the Capital City

Baton Rouge is getting in on the Cinco de Mayo celebrations next week. The city has more than a handful of Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants that are providing drink and food specials as well as live entertainment. Check out some highlights:

Caliente Mexican Craving — 1072 West Lee Drive. 388-5961. Read 225‘s review.
Located outside LSU’s campus, Caliente hosts a five-day musical celebration, starting Friday, May 1, with Burris 7 p.m.-10 p.m. The Rounders perform Saturday, May 2, 7 p.m.-10 p.m. Kristen Foreman performs Sunday, May 3, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The Chris Bradford Band performs Monday, May 4, 7 p.m.-10 p.m. Beaucoup Boogie performs Tuesday, May 5, 7 p.m.-10 p.m.

Lava Cantina — 10001 Perkins Rowe b100. 448-3920.
Perkins Rowe’s Tex-Mex restaurant will host a pre-Cinco Block Party starting Saturday, May 2 at 9 p.m. with a performance by the Latin band Ovi-G Froggies. The Chee Weez perform Sunday, May 3, at 5 p.m. on the outdoor stage, followed by Letters in Red at 8:30 p.m. on the indoor stage. $10 cover. Werewolf performs Tuesday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m.

Head to this hole-in-the-wall taqueria for $2 tacos and drink specials all day next Tuesday, May 5.

Superior Grill — 5435 Government St. 927-2022.
The popular Mid City Mexican restaurant will have live music on the patio.

La Carretta — 9828 Bluebonnet Blvd. 303-9899. 4065 Government St. 334-9940.
The restaurant’s Bluebonnet location will host a block party next Tuesday, and the Government Street location will have music from Fresina Brothers starting at 3 p.m. Both locations open at 11 a.m. and will also have drink specials.

Chef Jim Urdiales says the restaurant will have a limited select menu for Tuesday and will be open 11 a.m.-10 p.m. DJ Otto will provide music in the evening, and the restaurant is hosting a “pimped out sombrero” contest. Participants will compete for the best decorated sombrero, and winners will get a prize bag.

Ninfa’s Mexican Restaurant — 4738 Constitution Ave. 924-0377.
This restaurant is hosting a block party, starting at 4 p.m., with live music starting at 5 p.m. There will also be a mustache photo contest, and Rico Suave food truck will be serving tacos. The first 100 people at the block party get a free sombrero. Business hours are 11 a.m.-11 p.m.

El Rio Grande — 8334 Airline Highway. 926-1348. Read 225‘s review.
The 50-year-old restaurant will have a party, starting at 4:30 p.m. The restaurant will be giving away T-shirts and will have specials on tequila shots.

Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar & Restaurant — 151 Third St. 361-0372.
The downtown restaurant will have tons of specials next Tuesday, including $5 margaritas, $5 Jose Cuervos shotskis, $5 pineapple-infused tequila shots, $1 beef and veggie tacos, $2 chicken tacos, a mariachi band, piñatas and party favors. Also at 5 p.m., Lucy’s is offering five-cent margaritas for five minutes. The specials kick off a new monthly celebration that will happen on the fifth of every month. Business hours will be 11 a.m.-2 a.m.

Mi Padres Mexican Grill & Cantina — 7750 Bluebonnet Blvd. 757-7800.
This restaurant inside the Bluebonnet Village Shopping Center will have two-for-one margaritas, a live band outside and food specials such as the Mexican Sampler, which feeds two people, for $18.

Fuzzy’s Taco Shop 220 West Lee Drive. 771-8256.
The restaurant inside the Burbank Terrace Shopping Center will host its regular Taco Tuesday event, where tacos are 50 cents each, as well as $2 12-ounce. margaritas.

Coyote Blues — 2450 South Acadian Thruway. 329-2055.
The Mexican grill is featuring $2 house margaritas and Mexican beers all day Tuesday. From 3 p.m.-close, the restaurant is hosting its kids’ night special, where children ages 12 and under eat free. Business hours are 11 a.m.-10 p.m.

Casa Maria — 7955 Bluebonnet Boulevard. 757-7447.
The Mexican bar and grill will have live music.

Fernando’s10655 Coursey Boulevard. 291-2919.
This Mexican grill will feature live music.

Acadian House Kitchen + Bath Design —  6971 Exchequer Drive. 756-2777.
Chef Matt Reed will host another edition of Sip & Sauté Tuesday, May 5, 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. The event is a cooking class/four-course meal that will feature blackened fish tacos and chimichurri flank steak. Each course is served with a complementary wine pairing. Tickets are $35.
