An Oscar winner reunites with an action director for a silver screen adaptation of an ’80s television drama. Denzel Washington stars as Robert McCall in this weekend’s The Equalizer, directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Olympus Has Fallen). McCall is a former government agent with a mysterious past. Though he’s dedicated himself to a quiet life, McCall meets a young girl, Teri (Chlöe Grace Moretz) who is under the control of Russian gangsters and in need of help. After impressing audiences with an Oscar-nominated performance in Flight, the always reliable Washington is back in revenge mode a la the underrated Man on Fire. The actor probably won’t get any awards for this performance, even though Fuqua’s Training Day got him his second Oscar. The fact that this film is based on a short-lived ’80s television show might make audiences even more apprehensive. But The Equalizer could be good popcorn fare before the heavier fall movies hit theaters. Rated R. View the trailer below.
