On Trend: Three ways to wear a white button down
Having an assortment of staples in your closet is the first step to being fashionable. One of those staples everyone has always sworn by is a white oxford shirt. Personally, after several years of private school uniforms, the idea of wearing a white button down by choice was not something I would even consider until recently. But I’m converted. It really is the perfect, incredibly versatile addition to everyone’s wardrobe, regardless of your style or body type.
I snagged mine at the J. Crew outlet during a 40% off sale, and it is ideal for dressing up or down. While I hate ironing, I find wrinkle-resistant oxfords skew on the dressier side so it’s not as appropriate for my typically casual wardrobe. The boyfriend cut works best for my shape and style, but a tailored one is a great option to consider as well.
As with any investment, research is key. Finding a good staple is almost never an easy task, but once you’ve got it, it’s an easy go-to when you have higher priorities than your outfit. And on those days, here are a couple options to help make your decision easier.

Gap jeans, Rebecca Minkoff flats, Marc Jacobs bag
Classic. Jeans and a white button down is the iconic casual outfit. When paired with oxfords and minimal jewelry, this look is perfect for days when you need to appear put together but not too put together. If you need to be a little bit dressier, it’s easy to dress the look up with a fun pair of heels and a bright lipstick. Keeping it easy and relaxed is key. Don’t overthink it.
Gap shorts, Tommy Hilfiger espadrilles
Weekend. Cutoffs are all the rage right now. Adding a white button down and interesting sandals keeps you on trend while still being age-appropriate and not looking like Daisy Duke. You can even try using it as a beach cover up, if you want something a bit different than the norm.
Anthropologie, J. Crew necklaces
Trends. The white shirt is an excellent blank canvas for trying out something you might be skeptical about integrating into your style, like bold statement jewelry or trendier pieces (check out how Lauren wore a white button down with palazzo pants). Trying something new while keeping everything else basic is a great way to dip your toe into the fashion pool.
