Grab a brew and learn about space on Wednesday

Have a beer at the Varsity Theatre with a side of science at this month’s Astronomy on Tap Wednesday, May 15. Play games, enter raffles and listen to talks by astronomy experts starting at 7 p.m., all while sipping on a brew or a space-themed drink.

Astronomy on Tap will feature Dr. Arlo Landolt from LSU’s astronomy department talking about his experience in Antarctica. Also on Wednesday, check out Dr. Scott Marley’s “Hot, Dense and Radioactive” talk about his work with nuclear astrophysics.

This event is free, and doors open at 6:30 p.m. The Varsity is at 3353 Highland Road.


Try your hand at making sushi this weekend

Learn to make sushi like a professional at Tsunami this Saturday, May 18. Grab your girls or a lunch date, and head over to Tsunami 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for a sushi making class, including a lesson on sushi’s history and recipe tips and tricks.

Have a go at your own rolls, and top off your sushi-making attempt with a little sake—whether you’re a successful sushi chef or not.

Tsunami is on the top floor of the Shaw Center at 100 Lafayette St.


Sip Italian wines at Martin Wine Cellar this weekend

Skip the overnight plane ride, and travel to Italy via an Italian wine tasting at Martin Wine Cellar this Saturday, May 18. Taste more than 20 wines at the 3rd Annual Vino Italiano Festival 6-7:30 p.m. Pair those delicious wines with a selection of meats, cheese and bites available from Martin Wine Cellar’s deli.

Celebrate firefighters with a crawfish boil this Saturday

Eat your fill of crawfish at the Music and Mudbugs fundraising event for The Robert A. Bogan Baton Rouge Fire Museum this Saturday, May 18. Celebrate FireFighter Appreciation Day with an evening filled with crawfish, drinks, live music, a silent auction, fire service exhibits and games. Head to the museum between 6 and 11 p.m.

Tickets are $35 and can be purchased here. The museum is at 427 Laurel St.


Catch a sneak peek of Theatre Baton Rouge’s summer musical this Sunday

If you’re eager to check out this year’s summer musical at Theatre Baton Rouge, grab dinner at Flambée Café Sunday, May 19, for a preview of Disney’s NewsiesDon’t miss this dinner and a show from 6-7:30 p.m. or your chance to win tickets to the full show in a raffle. Newsies opens at Theatre Baton Rouge June 14 and runs until June 30.
