Hone your healthy cooking skills at a cooking demo

Learn to cook with fresh farmers market ingredients on Wednesday, May 1, at the Farmer’s Market Focus cooking demonstration. Watch nutrition experts from Oschner Medical Center’s Eat Fit BR cook up some healthy dishes at the Red Stick Spice Company, 6-7:30 p.m. And the best part: Participants get to taste these creations after the demo.

Did someone say free tequila? Yep, you heard that right. Head over to The Radio Bar Thursday, May 2, for a free tequila tasting. Sip on some tequilas with Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits, 5-7 p.m. If The Radio Bar is your kinda place, come back on Sunday, May 5, 2-6 p.m., for Free Food Sunday with Play Dead Donkey’s Taqueria.

Kick-off your Cinco de Mayo fiesta early with this cookie decorating class

Cinco de Mayo is coming up this Sunday, so get a head start on your fiesta preparations at a cookie decorating class Thursday, May 2. Sign up for this class at Light House Coffee to learn to decorate six different Cinco de Mayo-themed cookies with Jackie Wilson from Jackie’s Sweet Shapes. A $45 ticket gets you the premade cookies, icing and decorating tools plus a margarita from Taco Chops Cantina. Light House Coffee will also offer coffee, tea and snacks for purchase during the event.

Enjoy freshly boiled crawfish this Friday evening

There’s nothing we south Louisianans love more than a crawfish boil, and there’s a big one downtown this Friday, May 3. Listen to music at Live After Five while you taste some delicious crawfish boiled by Baton Rouge corporations and organizations at the Crawfish King Cook-Off.

Gates open for the cook-off at 4 p.m. Head to 222 North Blvd. to participate in the festivities. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door or $10 for kids younger than 10. Tickers can be purchased here.


Enjoy this picnic perfect spring weather on Sunday

Break out your picnic blankets and baskets for the 25th anniversary of the Old State Capitol’s restoration and reopening on Sunday, May 5. This Once Upon a Time picnic event will feature games, historical characters, a re-dedication ceremony and a performance by students from the Baton Rouge Center for Visual and Performing Arts. While you’re there, check-out the “Castle on the River” exhibit or head to the basement for a replica of a Civil War-era prisoner cell.

Enjoy the festivities from 1-4 p.m. on the Old State Capitol grounds at 100 North Blvd.
