Celebrate Kwanzaa by supporting Baton Rouge’s Black-owned restaurants this week

In a year that upended many of our routines, it’s important to try to maintain and celebrate some of our traditions for a semblance of normalcy and to remember what’s important.

With Kwanzaa, which started Dec. 26 and runs until Jan. 1, each day is an opportunity to reflect on its seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.

While the pandemic has canceled many in-person community events, there are still ways to celebrate Kwanzaa at home. You can light a candle each day to represent each principle, you can cook traditional African dishes at home, and you can also support Black-owned restaurants in the Baton Rouge area.

Earlier this year, 225 Dine published a directory of the city’s Black-owned restaurants, and many of these businesses are still in need of your support to get through the economic struggles of the pandemic. Now is as good a time as any to show them some love.
