Baton Rouge grocers increasingly allow you to order groceries with your phone

Online grocery ordering is taking Baton Rouge by storm.

Local grocery stores like Matherne’s Market downtown and Rouses Supermarkets and big box retailers like Wal-Mart and Target have recently started offering online grocery ordering. Consumers can now purchase food from anywhere at any time.

“We wanted to have something that would make it easy for our customers to order groceries online and pick them up, trying to make it as convenient as possible,” says Matherne’s Market co-owner and manager Tony Matherne. “It was something we’d been trying to get going for the last couple of years.”

Instead of aimlessly perusing the aisles, shoppers can purchase only the groceries they need from the comfort of their own homes or while on their lunch breaks. And instead of waiting in long checkout lines, they can park in specially designated parking spaces and wait for an employee to bring their order outside.

Matherne’s system also offers online catering orders with delivery.

With additional plans for same-day grocery delivery in the works, Matherne says the initial response from shoppers has been positive, and the system will soon be in place at the other two Matherne’s location (Paulina and LaPlace), as well as the upcoming LSU location.

“We launched [the downtown] store first to kind of work through the process and get everybody comfortable with it,” he says.

Shoppers can place an online order from Matherne’s Market at mathernes.com/shop. Order pickup is available Monday-Saturday, 10a.m.-7:30 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m.
