It’s almost fall—but first, 12 summery Baton Rouge dishes to indulge in this Labor Day weekend

Next Monday, Sept. 3, is Labor Day. Beginning in the late 19th century, Labor Day was officially created to celebrate the hard work and success of Americans and the country as a whole. That being said, Labor Day is also unofficially known as the end of summer in the United States. While we all know that summer in Louisiana is sure to last a couple more weeks at the very least, we took this opportunity to revisit some of our favorite summer dishes from restaurants around Baton Rouge before it gets a bit cooler.

Breakfast

Magpie Café’s seasonal scones and quiches

The downtown location of Magpie Café offers seasonal scones that are perfect for taking advantage of summer fruits and flavors. The scones rotate through a weekly menu and feature fruits like blackberries, blueberries, lemons and more.

Another Broken Egg Café’s granola, fruit and quinoa power bowl

The Baton Rouge breakfast favorite serves up a refreshing blend of granola, blueberry-infused quinoa and fresh seasonal berries with a coconut drizzle. This fruity dish is sure to have you dreaming of a day on the beach.

The Ruby Slipper Café’s Morning Margarita

If a liquid breakfast is more your thing, The Ruby Slipper Café has you covered. Its Morning Margarita is made with tequila, triple sec, lime and seasonal fruit. Talk about a tropical wake up call!

Lunch

Cocha’s Lemon Kale Salad

There is nothing that says summer like a cold, crisp salad, and Cocha’s Lemon Kale Salad does the trick. Made with fresh kale, strawberries, shallots and broccoli and topped with a lemon vinaigrette, this salad is sure to complement sunny skies and a fresh tan.

Kalurah Street Grill’s Gulf Fish Tacos

Does anything pair together better than fish tacos and a summer night out with friends? Light, fresh and festive, these tacos from Kalurah Street Grill won’t disappoint.

Bistro Byronz’s Chicken Salad Sandwich

Something as refreshing as a cold chicken salad sandwich deserves to be on the minds and plates of everyone before summer is over. To top it off, you can add a side of Bistro Byronz‘s Bleu Cheese Chips featuring home-fried chips, blue cheese drizzle and real blue cheese crumbles. Wash it down with a Rosé Freeze, because what’s more summer than that?

Dinner

Tsunami’s Green Monster Roll

While really any roll from Tsunami would fit into our vision of a perfect summer evening, the Green Monster Roll stands out because of its fruity twist. The roll is made with coconut shrimp, snow crab, cream cheese, cucumber, kiwi, avocado, strawberry, coconut flakes and plum sauce, and is even more refreshing and colorful than it sounds. And while you are there, you can also enjoy a night on the rooftop dining area, overlooking a beautiful Baton Rouge summer sunset.

Creole Cabana—Raw Oysters

The week of Labor Day has another unofficial holiday tucked (or should we say shucked) in it—oyster season in Louisiana traditionally begins the Wednesday after Labor Day. There is no better way to celebrate both oyster season and summer’s end than with fresh oysters and sand volleyball at Creole Cabana. To add to the flavor, Creole Cabana offers various cold and hot toppings on its oysters like the Marguerite topping loaded with lime, salt, cilantro and jalapeno.

BRQ Seafood and Barbeque—The Pitmaster Combo

Our childhood memories of summer would be incomplete without evenings spent at the neighborhood barbeque. Regardless of the time of year, something about the faint smell of barbeque automatically transports us back to being a kid and loading a plate high with meaty goodness. To satisfy our inner-child, BRQ offers the Pitmaster Combo, which includes the choice of three meats, one side and 1/4 rack of baby back ribs.

Dessert

Superior Grill’s Key Lime Pie

Whether it’s the graham cracker crust, the tart lime taste or the dollop of whipped cream on top, Key lime pie is a tried and tested crowd-pleaser, especially in the summer. Lucky for you, Superior Grill serves up key lime pie year-round, so you can pretend summer never ended.

Brain Freeze Delights’ specialty snoballs

While your average snoball might be a pretty basic choice for a Louisiana summer treat, Brain Freeze Delight’s specialty snoballs are so over the top they belong in a category all their own. Stuffed with ice cream, fresh fruit, syrups and even whole pieces of cheesecake, these snoballs are a must-have for a summer afternoon—or every summer afternoon. You can read about one of their most popular specialty snoballs, the Chantilly Cake Cheesecake-stuffed Snoball in our 225 Dine story.

Rock N’ Pops’ topped popsicles

Finishing off with the ultimate summer classic, popsicles of all varieties are the perfect way to say goodbye (or please leave) to the summer weather. Whether you like them plain or topped with candy, cookies and any other topping imaginable, Rock N’ Pops has got you covered.
