Things to do this weekend in Baton Rouge: Tiger 10K, Crawfish King Cookoff, Star Wars Day and more

Pinch and peel crawfish Friday

Bring your appetite to the Crawfish King Cookoff on Friday, May 2, at Rhorer Plaza in downtown Baton Rouge. The event benefits Junior Achievement of Greater Baton Rouge and the Big Buddy Program. 

At the 11th annual event, indulge in mudbugs and cast your vote for your favorite boil to be crowned Crawfish King. Live After Five will also be running from 5-8 p.m.

The Crawfish King Cookoff is from 4-8 p.m. Ticket prices are $35 in advance, $40 at the gate and $10 for kids ages 3-10. Rhorer Plaza is at 200 Saint Louis St. Find more information here


Laugh out loud Friday

Head over to the Manship Theatre for Varla Jean Merman: Errors Tour! on Friday, May 2. 

Varla Jean Merman is a character portrayed by Jeffery Roberson, an American actor, singer and drag performer. 

The Errors Tour! starts at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $41 to $66, including fees. Manship Theatre is at 100 Lafayette St. Find more information here


Attend a festival at the zoo Saturday

Bring the kiddos to BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo on Saturday, May 3, for the Arts for Animals Festival. 

The one-day fest is a celebration of a juried art exhibition viewing wildlife through the lens of art, which has been on display on weekdays at the zoo since February and concludes later this month. The festival offers a full day of fun, including interactive art, caricatures, face painting, character meet-and-greets and more. 

The Art for Animals Festival is from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Tickets prices are $10 for adults and teens, $7 for ages 2-12, $8.50 for seniors, and free for members and ages 1 and younger. BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo is at 3000 Zoo Circle. Find more information about the exhibit here and the festival here


Run the Tiger 10K on Sunday

It’s off to the races on South Stadium Drive on Sunday, May 4, for the Our Lady of the Lake Tiger 10K

Runners can participate in the 10K, 5K or Lamar Tiger Kids Mile. All runners will get to see the entirety of LSU’s campus and finish off the race in Tiger Stadium on the 50-yard line and slap the “Win” bar. 

The Tiger 10K begins at 8 a.m. Registration fees are $30 for the Lamar Tiger Kids Mile, $50 for the 5K and $65 10K, plus fees. The race will kick off on LSU’s campus at South Stadium Drive near Tiger Stadium’s south end zone. Find more information here


Celebrate Star Wars Day on Sunday

Travel the galaxy to the Louisiana Art & Science Museum for Free First Sunday, May 4, with the theme Star Wars Day at LASM: May the Fourth Be With You.

Experience fun activities for all ages, including hands-on Star Wars-themed crafts and activities, astronomy shows at the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium for a reduced price of $5, demonstrations from the Baton Rouge Astronomical Society and much more. 

Free First Sunday is from 1-5 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. LASM is at 100 S. River Road. Find more information here


Listen to live music Sunday

Attend ChiFest Louisiana Music Fest on Sunday, May 4, at Red Stick Social. 

The event will celebrate music culture, featuring independent artists from all over the world. 

ChiFest runs from 5-9 p.m. Ticket prices vary from $5 to $150. Red Stick Social is at 1503 Government St. Find more information here.
