Think Twice Style: Well Suited—’Fried Green Tomatoes’
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café. Pure Southern sass and good old fashioned humor. Fannie Flagg’s depiction of the lives of Alabama residents in the 1920s, with the story being told from the 1980s. Flashbacks, people … literary gold! Read the book, see the movie, but either way it is an experience you will not quickly forget.
My favorite character is, of course, Idgie Threadgoode. A tomboy to the core with a mouth like an open sewer, Idgie will not put up with nonsense. Imagine a tomboy in the 1920s, when the ladylike thing to do was wear flowing dresses and gloves! The scandalous act of a woman wearing pants was rarely seen in the South, especially not in small towns.
The best part about taking on Idgie’s tomboy style was that I already had everything in my closet. Boyfriend jeans are your friend, ladies! Better yet, buy a pair from the men’s section. I can’t quite explain it, but rest assured that your rump looks better in a pair of men’s denim. Trust. Don’t forget to add a little roll at the bottom to show some ankle.

A creamy white button down is an easy find and is a versatile piece to have in your wardrobe because it can be paired with just about anything. Tuck it in all the way or use the front-half-tuck method. A partial or full tuck helps gives you shape that the boxy jeans take away. Balance out your body with that little trick.
Add a belt to break up your fabrics. A neck tie is optional, but a kitschy way to add flair. A wide-brimmed fedora adds a bit of texture and authenticity to the look. Everyone wore hats in the early 1900s, so embrace the topper. To finish off the look, loafers are a must. I cannot stress enough the versatility of a pair of loafers! You will find that they go with everything. And maybe you will end up with more loafers than ballet flats, like someone I know. Okay, it’s me.
How would you interpret Idgie’s tomboy style? Who is your favorite character in Fried Green Tomatoes?
