Think Twice Style: Black on Black

One of the most difficult things to pull off fashion-wise is a monochrome look. Most difficult of all? Black on black. The darkest of all colors has very little dimension. The key to making it work is texture. And lots of it!

Let’s begin with your outerwear. A faux fur coat is a must for winter. Granted, one that is both gorgeous and warm is hard to find, but worth searching for. Looking like a black bear (but a very cute black bear) all season is the goal. Under your coat, layer a collared shirt under a sweater. Mix in a crocodile skin-textured blouse. The asymmetrical cable knit plays off the croc print and the furry coat. Leather pants give a bit of sheen, but dull trousers are more office appropriate. Keep the silhouette on the bottom skinny, however, to balance out chunky layers on top.

For accessories, it all depends on your own personal style. Iridescent sneakers are cool and down-to-earth. Calf hair and leather Chelsea boots are more polished. Both are great staples for any wardrobe and, in our haphazard climate, could be worn year-round. For added warmth, leather gloves are a lovely option. They look elegant peeping out of your coat sleeves and ladylike when set on the table at lunch. A cross-body handbag will keep you hands free when you’re out and about town. The black and white stripes add some whimsy into the look and gently break up the monochrome.
