I know, I know … it’s August already. How the heck did that even happen? It was just yesterday that I helped my students rip up their folders and have a confetti party to celebrate finals being over … right?!

Besides the shiny new pencils, fresh kicks, and a syllabus still hot from the copy machine, the best part about a new school year is a new wardrobe. Whether that’s a sans-Taco-Tuesday-stain new shirt, or remixing items from last year, that first impression is important. For the raging heat, I usually go with dresses until our first cool snap in, say, February 2016. Kidding, please not that long! Easy “no touchies” are the best for the first few weeks. Your body is still getting used to an alarm and seeing the sunrise, so give your brain a break and go with something simple. Dresses are just that. Slip it on and go!

For days when you need to mix it up and wear your “grading papers pants” (you teachers know exactly what I mean), don a stretch pair from a teacher-friendly brand like J. Crew. Discounts! Holla! A modern take on the button-down shirt is a fresh view on a closet staple. White may seem like a smart choice, but trust me, when that first pen bursts in essay-grading frustration, you will be glad to be wearing a darker shade. Top off your look with a blazer, especially when you head into that first parent-teacher conference of the school year. Think of it as your power blazer—let it give you that extra boost of confidence even though you missed your cup/bowl/IV of coffee that morning.

Keep your accessories minimal. Make your punch with a pair of bright slip-ons or classic loafers. Bright shoes will give you a smile when you look down during a busy day, while loafers are a great staple and versatile with any look. Carry all of your extra busy work to and fro in a durable backpack (knapsack? book bag?) and risk looking like one of the kids. All of those hours on your feet and hovered over your desk can cause major back and neck issues in the future. Swap out your tote for a carry-all on your back. Your chiropractor bill will thank you.
