On Trend: Ladies and gentlemen, meet my new best friend
My skin is very fair, basically burning the minute it’s exposed to the sun. Pair that with a family history of skin cancer and you’ve got yourself a poster child for sun protection. My friends will tell you, I’m a bit obsessive when it comes to sunscreen (but rightfully so). I’m the one at the festival carrying the SPF 80 that everyone starts to appreciate around 2 p.m. I am forever sending motherly text reminders to friends on vacation about smart sun exposure. I usually have several bottles of various brands of sunscreen on hand—in the car, in the medicine cabinet, at the office—just in case of emergency. So when we wrote about Supergoop! recently, I decided to see how it measures up.
Price: At $19, Supergoop! is only a little more expensive than what I’ve been buying (which is around $10-12 at the drugstore), but not nearly as expensive as a lot of other premium sunscreens I’ve been hesitant to try. I’m just not ready to shell out $35 for something I’m reapplying every few hours.
Scent: I really don’t like the smell of sunscreen. It would seem that in the 30-plus years I’ve used it, no one has figured out how to improve the smell. Thankfully, Supergoop! has a light citrus scent, which is mostly neutral. Olfactory success.

Application: I typically buy spray sunscreen. Putting on a lotion is fine early in the day, but once I have to reapply, I’m never in a place where I can wash my hands
before and after. Rubbing dirty sunscreen into my skin is not something I want to do. So a spray is my best option. The only problem is that it somehow defies all logic by being simultaneously powdery and greasy after the second application. Supergoop! did not have this problem. After two applications throughout a sweaty berry picking session, I only felt gross from being outside in the heat for four hours—don’t blame the multiple coats of sunscreen. Completely residue-free results.
Supergoop! has tons of other things going for it including being vegan and gluten-free—I wouldn’t suggest eating it, but it means it’s totally kid friendly. It is also non-comedogenic, non-irritating and allergy-free; all huge perks for those of us with sensitive skin. If you don’t want to take my word for it, you should know that Maria Sharapova is now co-owner of the company. Let’s be honest, if a professional tennis player believes in it, it has to be good. Their job is to basically stand on the surface of the sun, instantly sweating off any carefully applied preventative measure. I picked mine up from Sephora, which only had the Antioxidant-infused Sunscreen Mist and the Anti-Aging City Sunscreen Serum. But check out the Supergoop! website for more exciting options, like the Sun Defying Sunscreen Oil.
