On Trend: Fall into fall
Fall is upon us. As it starts to get cooler, it’s time to start integrating layers and more luxe fabrics into your daily routine. Here are a couple essentials that I’m always anxious to pull out as soon as the temperature starts to drop. Bonus: All of these items can either be worn together, or easily mixed into your existing wardrobe to transition into fall.
Ankle boots
It took me a while to get used to these. I was convinced they made me look like I had cankles. The key with the fit, for me anyway, is finding a boot that isn’t tight against my ankle. I snagged a great pair from Target on sale last year and wore them practically every day, and plan on doing the same this year. Marshall’s has a lot of great affordable options right now that you can test drive if you’re still on the fence.

Leather skirt
Having essentials in non-standard fabrics is a great way to keep your wardrobe interesting. Whether it’s a-line or pencil, a leather skirt is a great addition to anyone’s closet. Keep the shape basic and modest to get the most wear out of it, and to prevent looking like you’re headed to see an ’80s hair band. Definitely reserve this for the cooler days though. It can get pretty warm.

Silk shirt
As it gets cooler and more fabric is covering your skin, you might as well wear something that feels amazing. Cashmere is great for filling that role, but it’s a little pricey. A blousy silk shirt is a more affordable but equally pleasant option. I’ve had my eye on this one from Everlane for a while, if I could just decide which color to buy.

Trench
The trench is the most essential of essentials, perfect for brisk fall days and equally appropriate paired with layers in winter months. It’s a versatile investment that never goes out of style. Stick with a neutral to get the most wear out of it, but don’t rule out twists on a classic. My trench of choice is a bold striped neon and khaki one, and I wear it more than any of my other coats with almost any outfit.
