BOTANIC GARDEN AT INDEPENDENCE PARK

BREC’s Botanic Garden focuses on horticultural education, recreation and nature studies. Volunteers in the Botanic Garden Foundation help plant and maintain specialty gardens, while BREC provides a landscape crew for the grounds. The garden contains 10 separate attractions, each offering its own distinct design. The Rose Garden showcases more than 400 rose plants of every species. In the Butterfly Garden, guests can watch butterflies flutter from plant to plant. The Sensory Garden houses herbs and other plants used for food seasonings. While the garden is open to the public, it continues to be a work in progress between BREC and the Botanic Garden Foundation. When we visited during our shoot, the garden was under construction, with a new butterfly garden, promenade and parterre garden in the works. Botanic Garden staff estimates parts of the project will be finished by early summer and fully complete this fall. brec.org

LSU HILLTOP ARBORETUM

The Hilltop Arboretum spans 13 acres of native trees and shrubs. The arboretum is a wonderland of natural landscapes—and it’s also an outdoor laboratory. Originally owned by Emory Smith and donated to LSU in 1981, the arboretum is now managed by the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture. It offers visitors education on natural systems, plants and landscape design. Also check out the eco-friendly Imogene Newsom Brown Education Facility; complete with library, pavilion and auditorium, it was the first LSU building to be LEED-certified. 11855 Highland Road, lsu.edu/hilltop

BURDEN MUSEUM & GARDENS

The Burden Museum & Gardens sits on 440 acres, offering a variety of different Louisiana agriculture and architecture. At the Botanic Gardens, visit the specialty gardens, woodlands, wetlands and arboreta. Walk through five miles of trails or take in the views of The Rose Garden (pictured on page 77), Children’s Garden and All-America Selections Display Garden. And if you’re looking for more history, the LSU Rural Life Museum is mere steps away, giving guests a glimpse into 19th-century Louisiana with historic buildings and artifacts on display. Or, head to the Windrush Gardens for a view of oak trees, crepe myrtles, azaleas and camellias. 4560 Essen Lane, lsuagcenter.com/portals/burden
