How to edit your wardrobe down to 37 items this season
Back to basics
December finds many of us at a fashion crossroads. We peer into our closets and the impending new year, and we wonder, is it time to reinvent? Did we even wear half of the pieces we bought in 2015?
Un-Fancy.com blogger Caroline Rector led the national “capsule wardrobe” trend this year, inspiring many to de-clutter their closets. The rules are simple: For each three-month season, trim your wardrobe down to a collection of around 37 versatile items, including tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear and shoes. Discard anything extra and commit to wearing only what’s left for the next three months.
If paring down so much of your wardrobe sounds daunting, remember to value quality over quantity. Here are a few examples from local boutiques of back-to-basics staples you’ll need to build your own capsule wardrobe.

Tops
Tops accumulate quickly for many of us, but most winter capsule wardrobes only include 15 shirts, blouses and sweaters. Choose carefully and layer creatively.
Patterned
Double Zero plaid top, $32, available at Apricot Lane, apricotlaneboutique.com
Basic
Lavender Brown white top, $128, available at Currie, shopcurrie.com
Casual
Nation LTD baseball tee, $110, available at Currie, shopcurrie.com
Bottoms
In the late winter months, you need only a few versatile bottoms, including jeans, work-appropriate pants and a neutral skirt or two. Rector recommends nine or fewer bottoms total.
Jeans
MiH high-rise super-skinny jeans, $220, available at Eros, facebook.com/eros-baton-rouge
Pants
Blank “Follow Me” waxed pants, $98, available at Currie, shopcurrie.com
Skirt
Liberty Garden patchwork skirt, $105, available at Currie, shopcurrie.com
Dresses
Depending on your lifestyle, your capsule wardrobe could include two to five dresses. Choose different levels of formality, and style them up or down for any occasion.

Shoes
A typical capsule wardrobe includes about nine pairs of shoes, not including athletic gear. Neutral flats, booties and a pair of killer heels should round out your collection.
