1. Make sure your foundation has moisturizer.
As temperatures drop, hydrating skin is crucial. “Think of it as water for your skin,” Quinn says of foundation.
2. Skip the powder.
Powder finishes are great for the heat but not for the cold. Ditch the pencil liner, powder eye shadows and blushes, and swap them for liquids.
3. Bright lips, soft smoky eyes and colorful eyeshadows are trending for holidays.
“People always want to do a smoky eye, which has so many interpretations,” Quinn says. “This season there’s a softer take on it that’s not so ‘rocker’ and a little more forgiving.” Bright red lips are still fun for holiday parties, and colorful eyeshadows—especially green—are in style. “But not with a red lipstick, because you don’t want to look like a Christmas tree,” he says.
4. Transition your workday makeup for an evening holiday party.
There are three easy fixes: Coat volumizing mascara on eyelashes, highlight around the eyes and pucker up with a brighter lip. Berry lipstick is especially trendy, Quinn says.
5. Lighter foundation ages the skin.
As we spend more time indoors in the winter, it seems natural to lighten up your foundation’s color. But it’s important to make sure you stay true to your skin’s tone and not go too light. “The most common beauty mistake we see women make are foundation problems via texture or tone. … Our skin tone changes as the day goes on or as the seasons change. … Just like your hair color, change your makeup, too,” he says.
