Rising Stars: William Schmidt

Catholic High School

Not many athletes get the opportunity to play for a national championship-winning team when they head to college. It takes a special kind of talent to draw the eye of the elites, particularly in the cut-throat world of SEC baseball. But that’s exactly what William Schmidt has been able to do in just two short years at Catholic High.

He’s pitched as a starter, reliever and closer for the Bears already in his prep career and even hit 90 mph on his fastball as a sophomore. And if you ask Schmidt, he’s only just getting warmed up.

“We have really good junior and senior classes, so I’m kind of counting on next year and senior year to be my really big roles,” says the Mississippi State commit. “(The Bulldog) coaches said just get better each day. They offer you for where you’re going to be, not where you are right now, so I’ve just got to get better each day.”

Schmidt has a plan, too. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound righty is focusing on improving his command and capitalizing on first-pitch strikes.

“The stats says when I get first pitch strikes, I get like 80 percent of the hitters out,” Schmidt says. “So I’m working on throwing first-pitch strikes and throwing every pitch for a strike more consistently.”

At the rate he’s going, Schmidt will be one to keep an eye out for when he arrives in Starkville in two years.
