CATS introduces Geaux Pass Mobile: A faster, more convenient way to ride

Capital Area Transit System (CATS) is making it easier and more convenient than ever for riders to pay their fares, with a transition from the UMO app to the new Geaux Pass Mobile system.

The previous UMO system is being phased out, but riders who still have funds on UMO won’t lose their balance. Those customers can visit CATS customer service at the terminal Monday-Friday, where staff will help transfer any remaining money from UMO to the new system.

This upgrade to Geaux Pass Mobile was made possible through grant funding, allowing CATS to modernize its fare technology without increasing costs for riders. Importantly, fares themselves are not changing, and there are no extra fees to use cards or digital payment methods with the new system.

Riders now have several flexible ways to pay:

Geaux Pass Mobile app
Geaux Pass Smartcard
Tap-to-pay with any card with an NFC chip
Magnetic fare cards
Cash & coins

While CATS is expanding its digital options, cash is still accepted on board. The goal isn’t to leave anyone behind, but to add more choices. CATS describes its approach as adaptable – embracing new technology while still serving riders who may not be as tech savvy or who prefer more traditional payment methods.

The new system also gives riders greater control and convenience. Instead of visiting customer service to add funds, many customers can now manage their balances online, making the system more user-friendly and self-sufficient. For riders who rarely carry cash and rely on cards or phones for everyday purchases, Geaux Pass Mobile fits naturally into their routines.

To support the transition, CATS conducted a soft launch, giving riders time to get acquainted with Geaux Pass Mobile before fully phasing out UMO. Early feedback has been positive, especially from tech-savvy customers who appreciate the faster boarding process and the ability to pay without digging through a wallet for cash or a physical card.

Behind the scenes, CATS has also updated its equipment, including installing new fare boxes across the bus fleet to support the upgraded technology. The result is a system designed to be quicker, more convenient and better aligned with how people pay for things today.
