This Spanish Town yard is packed with vintage decorations and handmade creations for Halloween
What started with a few handmade props in the yard a dozen years ago has turned into a Halloween-to-Christmas extravaganza for Greg Myers and his partner Patrick Ford at their home on Bungalow Lane in Spanish Town.
A growing number of vintage decorations and handmade creations each year have since come to make this outdoor space a popular stop for those seeking thrills in October or cheer in December.
“We have a tiny yard, so it’s almost completely filled with some sort of decorations for Halloween and Christmas,” Myers says. “But I’ve got room to add a little bit more.”
Myers enjoys following a theme each year, and many of his Halloween ideas are born out of his love for Disney—think Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion. In other years, he has turned the property into a mad scientist’s lab and a graveyard, a fitting theme for his profession as a funeral director. This year, Myers is modeling his display after American Horror Story.
Myers starts preparing for Halloween around June, gathering bits and pieces and getting to work creating his own props, so that he’s “fired up and ready to start” by the beginning of September. One of his favorite parts of crafting his Halloween displays is making many of the decorations himself. Cave walls, treasure chests, carved jack-o’-lanterns and radioactive vials are just some of his creations.
Though he decorates for both holidays, Myers says it’s Halloween that really gives him endless possibilities to explore his creativity. “Halloween is probably a little more fun because you can do wacky things, and it’s kind of like there are no rules,” he says. “Anything goes. I like to do more traditional stuff for Christmas.”
Myers says he gets many sightseers around Halloween, and he hopes that through his decorations, he is able to spread some joy in his community. “That’s, of course, the best part,” he says.
