“Almost Like the Blues”
LEONARD COHEN
A natural extension of Leonard Cohen’s ethereal latter-day sound, this track pairs a simple beat with recited vocals that are anything but ordinary: “There is no God in heaven and there is no hell below, so says the great professor of all there is to know,” he sings. “But I’ve had the invitation that a sinner can’t refuse, and it’s almost like salvation; it’s almost like the blues.”

“Our Love”
CARIBOU
As if Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke collapsed in a tub of honey, this chill title track from Canadian composer Dan Snaith’s new album, out Oct. 7, is a confident and patient exercise in minimalist pop.

“Walk it Out”
JENNIFER HUDSON
Hudson’s sassy attitude is as sexy as her incredible range in this fresh and peppy track from new album JHUD. The song reflects her maturing sensibility as she comes into her own, confident and assured.

“The Best Day”
THURSTON MOORE
On the title track from his upcoming solo album, the Sonic Youth singer/guitarist showcases how easily he mines alt-rock gold. It doesn’t hurt that Moore also has blues, ferocious guitar solos, and drummer Steve Shelley’s forceful pounding on his side.
