Alternative Space: Prospect.3 wrapping up in BR

For the past two months, the entire fourth floor of an office building downtown has functioned almost like a contemporary art museum. More than 100 artists, sculptors, photographers and others have works displayed in the 15,000 square feet of formerly vacant space in the Chase Tower South downtown.

The entire project, part of Baton Rouge’s contribution to the art biennial Prospect.3 in New Orleans, wraps up Jan. 25, but not without a last hurrah. Elevator Projects’ Raina Wirta and LSU Museum of Art Preparator Rodneyna Hart curated the exhibit, dubbed Healthcare Gallery 2.0. They are planning a slew of guided tours for the rest of the month and gearing up for a closing reception tied to Baton Rouge Gallery’s Surreal Salon.

The exhibit has garnered a positive response in the Capital City, having provided a rare opportunity to see so many local and regional artists represented in one space.

“We wanted it to feel larger than Baton Rouge but still appropriate for Baton Rouge. It still is a very homegrown thing,” Hart says. “The response has been pretty great. There was a lot of organizing, planning and sleepless nights involved in getting this together.”

For the guided tours, Hart and Wirta also plan to incorporate artist talks. “We definitely want the artists to have a real presence [at these tours] so that participants can appreciate their art and what they’ve made,” Hart says.
