How sweet it is: Savory cinnamon rolls

Nutritionists may tell you that for the most important meal of the day, you should aim for something healthy. But then, what use is a cinnamon roll if not to make breakfast a little sweeter?

The folks at Strands Café seem to know this. The worldly downtown patisserie’s display case is filled every morning with fresh scones, shortbreads, cookies, handmade chocolate candies and, of course, its most popular item: massive cinnamon rolls.

These aren’t your basic straight-from-the-can variety. For the past 10 years, pastry chef Lilita Blanchard has made them by hand, cramming three perfect spirals of cinnamony dough together in cupcake tins so they come out of the oven looking like oversized flowers.

Next come the icing and powdered sugar, followed quickly by warm, delicious happiness. If you can get your hands on one of these cinnamon rolls before the morning rush, indulge in all that gooey goodness by yourself or tear the spirals apart to share with two friends.

After all, the sweetest morning treat in town comes in threes.
