First look at downtown’s newest restaurant, The Gregory

Downtown’s got another new restaurant to add to your date night rotation. The Gregory is now open inside the Watermark Hotel, and it’s the kind of place you’ll want to bring someone you’re hoping to impress.

Chefs Drue Vitter and Chad Galiano describe their farm-to-table food as Southern classics with a twist. The menu has all the usual Louisiana staples—gumbo, oysters, poboys, a crawfish andouille ravioli—but it’s also got its own spin on frog legs, foie gras and wood-stone flatbread pizzas.

Instead of paper menus, guests are handed iPads. Click on a dish, and a photo and suggested wine pairings pop up.

A bar top with cognac tufted leather and brass barstools surrounds the kitchen. Murals of Angela Gregory, the New Orleans sculptor whom the restaurant is named after, frame the walls, and a giant wine room off the kitchen holds an impressive selection of more than 140 wines.

But if fancy dinners aren’t your thing, the restaurant also aims to be a power lunch go-to. Starting this week, The Gregory offers an express lunch service: a three-course meal for $14 with the promise to get you in and out of the restaurant in 30 minutes. The soups/salads, entrees and desserts offered on the express menu will change daily, highlighting what’s fresh and in season.
