Fast Break: Taste in Main Street Market

Formerly A Taste of Downtown, Taste is one of many fresh, flavorful reasons to visit the Main Street Market downtown.

Located near the entrance of the market at Fifth and Main streets, Taste has some of the best sandwiches in town.

Chef/owner Richard Markert sources ingredients from his friends at the Red Stick Farmers Market. So, instead of a simple boudin sandwich on white bread, you get The Boo-Ray. This sandwich has a not-too-spicy boudin patty, pepper jelly, pepper jack cheese and sugary sweet honey glazed ham, heated on crispy French bread from Cartozzos in Kenner.

When I ate it, the bread has a crispy exterior and soft interior. No ingredient overpowered the other. The balance of sweet and spicy made me savor each bite. I wanted the experience of eating this sandwich to last three hours.

Can you tell that I will be a repeat customer?

Taste is open Monday-Friday 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.-noon inside the Main Street Market.

This week, Markert is celebrating his two-year ownership with a customer appreciation week. Customers get 10% off Monday-Thursday and Saturday during brunch. On Thursday, Taste will also serve free white chocolate pecan bread pudding with a praline glaze.

Taste will be closed Friday for the Fourth of July holiday.

Markert will also prepare grilled buffalo sliders at Olive or Twist Wednesday, July 1, 7 p.m.-9 p.m., during the bar’s free tasting. The sandwich has Buffalo Trace bacon jam, a watermelon-Buffalo Trace barbecue sauce and onion confit goat cheese.
