Extreme Burger: The Cove’s Maui Burger

July is the month for firing up the grill, lounging on the patio and dreaming of an island getaway. While the Hawaiian islands might seem too far away, The Cove Hawaiian Grill at least gives us a taste of that state’s tropical flavors.

Alongside Korean short ribs, grilled shrimp and, yes, even Spam, the colorful menu at The Cove also features the Hawaiian take on a classic burger.

Dubbed the Maui Burger, it features a black Angus beef patty, grilled onions and a thick slice of teriyaki-glazed pineapple. It’s all served on a toasted bun that holds up well to those juicy components.

Owner James Kim says the Maui Burger is popular in Hawaii, and while Baton Rougeans might be surprised by the addition of tangy pineapple, the burger has quickly become a favorite.

“The pineapple gives it a good flavor. It kind of blends in with each bite,” he says.

WHAT’S ON IT:

• Half-pound black Angus beef patty
• Teriyaki-glazed pineapple
• Grilled onion
• Lettuce
• American cheese
• House dressing
• Toasted bun

The Cove Hawaiian Grill is at 9618 Jefferson Highway. thecovehawaiiangrill.com
