Crawfish outlook: It’s early and they’re small, but they’re on sale

With the season of carnival debauchery over, the main question on Louisiana residents’ minds now becomes, “Where can I get some good crawfish?”

The weather has not made up its mind, and the crawfish catches have been pretty slim so far. Tuesday’s colder temperatures didn’t help, either. Local seafood markets such as Tony’s Seafood and Heads & Tails Seafood are telling 225 Dine that the crawfish they are selling are pretty small right now but are getting bigger everyday.

On average, a pound of live crawfish runs about $4. Boiled crawfish are $5 and up. Customers should expect a drop in prices over the next month or so. The crawfish season should get better around March, but it all depends on Mother Nature.

Here’s a small list of where you can get crawfish this season.

Tony’s Seafood. 5215 Plank Road. 357-9669.

Heads & Tails Seafood. 2070 Silverside Drive. 767-2525.

LA Boilers & Seafood Market. 2741 O’Neal Lane. 752-0211. 9085 Perkins Road. 767-0090.

Capital City Crawfish. 5355 Government St., Suite D. 636-2386.

Crawfish on the Geaux. A food truck that’s usually parked at 3655 Perkins Road. 810-6991.

Check back with 225 Dine throughout the season for more updates on this year’s crawfish harvest.
