What’s fresh at Baton Rouge farmers markets in October

It may not feel like fall just yet, but you can at least start stocking your kitchen with fall produce from the Red Stick Farmers Market. October at the farmers market brings in enough fresh, local produce to rival the rest of the year.

If you’re ready to make pumpkin everything in October, you’ll find plenty of pumpkins. Other fall crops include butternut squash and root vegetables like sweet potatoes, beets, radishes, turnips and Irish potatoes. October also means broccoli, mustard greens, collard greens and kale are in season. And look for local satsumas—citrus season begins in the fall.

Some summer veggies will still be in season in October, like tomatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, eggplant, sweet corn and green beans. Shoppers will also find shelled purple hull peas, red beans, peppers and green onions—all great additions to soups and stews.

Upcoming farmers market events:

Fresh from the Market cooking demonstrations will be held every Saturday at 10 a.m. inside Main Street Market.

Oct. 14: Chef Anne Milneck from Red Stick Spice Co.
