What’s fresh at Baton Rouge farmers markets in May

Spring is in full swing, and it shows at the Red Stick Farmers Market.

Look out for locally-grown vegetables this month such as cucumbers, peppers, green beans, yellow squash, zucchini, sweet corn, potatoes and varieties of tomatoes.

In late May, shoppers can look for red beans, eggplant, cantaloupe and blueberries. Or, if you want to dress up your home with fresh flowers, this month brings sunflowers and zinnias to the market.

If you’re interested in planting your own garden, the green nurseries offer herbs, vegetables, fruit trees, flowering plants and shrubs. Visit with members of the East Baton Rouge Master Gardeners this Saturday, May 6, at the market for advice on growing your summer home garden. The monthly Baton Rouge Arts Market will also return this Saturday.

Like every other month, shoppers can also buy protein from local farmers, such as seafood, beef, pork, chicken and lamb. Goat meat is also now available through Our Family Farm at the Thursday and Saturday markets.

Fresh from the Market cooking schedule:

MAY 6: Katelyn Fenley from Cultured Guru
MAY 13: Chris Funes from Our Lady of the Lake
MAY 20: Teresa Day from I EAT BR
MAY 27: Butterfly Gardening Presentation
