What’s fresh at Baton Rouge farmers markets in April

Spring has sprung, and that means loads of fresh produce are available at the Red Stick Farmers Market this month.

Louisiana strawberries are in abundance, so it’s the perfect time to pick up a flat or two of the peak-season berries. You can also stock up on fennel, bok choy, and lettuce and root vegetables like turnips, beets, carrots, radishes, new potatoes and green onions. If you’re looking for superfoods, healthy greens are available, including collards, kale, mustards, Swiss chard and spinach. As May approaches, expect to see some early yellow squash and zucchini.

This Saturday, April 7, the farmers market includes live music from The Lagniappe Dulcimers inside Main Street Market and The John Gray Jazz Trio outside beginning at 8 a.m. The East Baton Rouge Master Gardeners group also returns that day with tips for planting and caring for spring gardens. And since it’s the first farmers market of the month, you can catch the Baton Rouge Arts Market with artisans from all over the Gulf South area.
