Canefield Tavern to open in mid-October on Nicholson Drive

Canefield Tavern, a homestyle restaurant doubling as a coffee shop, will soon open in the former Brew-Bacher’s location on Nicholson Drive in Baton Rouge.

Owner David Smith says the target opening date is mid-October, but the exact date depends on permits.

The menu will feature classic Southern dishes like fried chicken and dumplings, a variety of sandwiches and soups, gumbos and sides that change daily. The restaurant will also have a full breakfast menu and a weekend brunch with an Eggs Benedict buffet and a build-your-own Bloody Mary bar.

The bar at Canefield Tavern will keep several local beers on tap, alcoholic and non-alcoholic milkshakes and malts and classic cocktails.

Smith and co-owner Doug Hary also own New Orleans restaurants Vacherie, Cafe Conti, Cafe at the Square, Between the Bread and Eat New Orleans. Smith also owns South of the Border in St. Francisville.

Canefield Tavern will be open 7 a.m.-10 p.m. to start, but Smith says he’ll extend the hours once everything is running smoothly. It is at 5251 Nicholson Drive.

Roux 61 to replace Boutin’s Restaurant in October

Natchez, Mississippi-based restaurant Roux 61 Seafood and Grill is set to open in the former Boutin’s Restaurant space on Bluebonnet Boulevard by the end of October.

Roux 61 will serve up plates like fried pickles and green tomatoes, soft shell crabs, chargrilled oysters and a number of po-boys.

Owners Brian and Jason Lees say renovations to the space are on track for an October opening, so long as no major problems turn up.

The restaurant’s website describes Roux 61 cuisine as a “yummy good mash-up of Southern flavor.”

Roux 61 will be open 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday- Saturday.

Chef Don Bergeron to move Mid City catering business, restaurant to former Pat’s location

Chef Don Bergeron says the size of the former Pat’s Cajun Seafood & Steaks location on Jefferson Highway enticed him to make a deal with the restaurant’s owners to take over the lease and move his Mid-City Market and catering operations to the space.

Pat’s closed on Sunday after nine months in business, and the 5,000 square feet of space will nearly double the space Bergeron has to work with. That move, which Bergeron says will take a few months, will include his kitchen and market, as well as a dining room for customers to eat and a private room for events.

“We have outgrown our physical space, and this opportunity provides us room to expand our services and still remain in the part of the city that has been so loyal to us,” Bergeron says in a statement. “We have been poised for an expansion for a couple of years, and this building gives us exactly what we need.”
