Holiday spirit: The Irish Mule

Green beer might be the go-to drink for this weekend’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities, but it can also be quite messy. Just ask the local bars (like Chelsea’s Café and Uncle Earl’s) that aren’t serving green beer this year for that very reason.

With that in mind, I went to Lock & Key Whiskey Bar to speak with co-owner Arthur Lauck. I told him that I was looking for a drink recommendation that would be perfect for this weekend.

Lauck instantly replied with The Irish Mule. The drink is a play on the Moscow Mule. However, this iteration uses Irish whiskey instead of vodka. This drink can be made in batches for the all-day St. Patrick’s Day parties or for a pre-game drink before walking to the parade. Check out the recipe below.

The Irish Mule
Mix half an ounce of lemon juice with one and a half ounces of Jameson (or Irish whiskey), pour over ice, then top with ginger beer.

If you’re looking for some good whiskeys for this weekend, Lauck also recommended Jameson’s Black Barrel Select Reserve and Redbreast 12-year-old Irish whiskey. The former has a longer finish than the traditional Jameson and has a considerable spice to its flavors. The latter is a complex single-pot still Irish whiskey that has been matured in sherry casks. Both bottles run around $40.
