Get juiced

Juice cleanses are all the rage, but for those of us just looking for a refreshing pick-me-up in the heat of the day, Big Squeezy’s got that, too. The recently opened shop in the Perkins Road overpass area got people talking with its cold-pressed blends of ripe, colorful produce—everything from pineapple to pear and kale to cucumber.

The multi-day cleanses have been a hit, offering up to seven days’ worth of prepared juices, but individual bottles of these blends are made and sold in the store daily.

Our favorites—and some of the store’s most popular—are the Root Awakening, with red beets, carrot, green apple, lemon and ginger, and the 24 Karrots, with carrot, green apple, pear and lemon. Though the apple shines through in both, the contrasting flavors balance out nicely.

There’s also a Spicy Lemonade with orange, lemon, grapefruit, ginger and cayenne if you can handle the heat.

Most of the juice blends are around $9 for 17-ounce bottles.

And if the rush of raw, fresh fruits and vegetables in liquid form is too much for you, they offer a few non-dairy smoothie options for around the same price. thebigsqueezy.com

The method keeps produce from being exposed to heat, so freshness and essential nutrients remain intact. The amount of pressure used for cold pressing also means not a drop of juice is left uncaught.
