Fresh picks at the farmers markets in November; BREADA’s 19th anniversary celebration

November is the start of cold, dreary weather in most places. Lucky for Louisianans, we still have a few weeks of breezy warm weather left, which means much of our favorite early fall produce remains.

November farmers markets offer up a lot of the same produce October saw, with a few small changes. Check out the list below to see what’s fresh at the markets this month.

What’s new: November doesn’t bring many new varieties to the table, but market-goers can expect to start seeing juicy citrus fruits like satsumas, lemons and oranges, carrots, cabbage and cauliflower.

Mid-season: November is the month of leafy greens and vegetables. Produce like spinach, collard and mustard greens, lettuce and broccoli is in full swing this month. Other mid-season produce includes sweet potatoes and beets, turnips, green beans, tomatoes and pecans.

Phasing out: Summer melons and squash are approaching the end of their seasons in November. Produce like yellow and zucchini squash and cantaloupes and watermelons will be harder to find as the month goes on. Bell peppers, okra, snap beans and eggplant are also coming to the end of their growing seasons.

The Red Stick Farmers Market is held every Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon at the corner of Fifth and Main streets, and at other times throughout the week. See the market’s weekly schedule here.
