Fast Break: Sushi Masa’s all-you-can-eat lunch

When a friend told me about Sushi Masa’s all-you-can-eat lunch for $15.95, I was ready for my next available lunch break.

I pulled up to Sushi Masa right at opening, 11 a.m., and the restaurant already had a crowd. Throughout my hour-long lunch, I saw more customers arriving to order sushi roll after sushi roll.

Inside the building, located at 5837 Essen Lane, I was transported into a world of dim lighting and bright sushi designs. A sushi bar sits in the center of the restaurant, but guests can also sit at tables scattered around the restaurant.

For appetizers, I started with the Miso Soup. It’s a classic starter choice for me when eating sushi, and Sushi Masa’s did not disappoint.

I also tried the Seaweed Salad, which came in a small, oval dish. The seaweed was a bright green and tossed in a vinaigrette that tasted sweet and sour at the same time. If I could get it bottled, I would—it’s that good.

For sushi rolls, I ordered three different Chef’s Special Rolls: the I-10 Roll, Bomb Roll and Masa Roll.

The I-10 Roll came out on its own plate. Featuring a hearty serving of snow crab, the roll was topped with bright yellow mango and a mango sauce. It was the perfect balance of sweet and refreshing and a great choice if you’re looking for a roll on the lighter side.

The I-10 Roll includes snow crab and mango.

The other two rolls were plated together. The Bomb Roll includes salmon, crabmeat and asparagus with a fried panko exterior, all finished with Sriracha, eel sauce and a wasabi mayo.

The wasabi mayo tasted just like wasabi, but it cut a bit of the hotness, allowing the other flavors to stand out. The combination of the three sauces plus the fried outside with the fish inside created a perfect medley of flavors.

The Masa Roll had a similar effect with its spicy crab and avocado on the inside, fried and then decorated with a “spicy” mayo and eel sauce.

Sushi Masa turned out to be a lunch goldmine. Just be wary of the leftovers rule: If the amount of leftovers on your plate appears to be too much, the $15.95 all-you-can-eat fee changes to a la carte pricing.

The biggest tip to achieve the best bang for your buck? Skip breakfast.
