Fast Break: Shrimp heaven at Lasseigne’s American Grill
In the Baton Rouge restaurant scene, there’s no shortage of seafood, steaks or spirits. The same is true for Lasseigne’s American Grill, but this restaurant knows how to do it right.
The restaurant, nicely nestled on Perkins Road in the former Frankie Marcello’s, is replete with beautiful woodworking that offers a homey feel upon entering, as if you already know the place.
As I was ushered to my booth, I overheard others in the lunchtime crowd raving about how delicious their food was, and how they wanted more. Always a good sign.

For an appetizer, I went with the barbecue shrimp. The large shrimp arrived beautifully plated, lined up in a pool of barbecue sauce with garlic bread on the side. The sauce was tasty and sweet, with fresh herbs giving it an extra something. The shrimp were cooked well, and when dipped in the additional barbecue sauce on the plate they were utterly perfect.
I kept the seafood theme going and ordered the grilled Gulf shrimp platter with onion rings as my entree. I’m not sure I could’ve gone wrong with anything on the menu, which features some light lunch options, including a nice variety of salads. But, as a lover of all things shrimp, this was the one for me, and it was a satisfying meal.
I’m not sure how many of Lasseigne’s expertly grilled and seasoned gulf shrimp I ate, but I could’ve eaten a hundred more. Unexpectedly, the onion rings might have been just as good as the shrimp. They were thin, crispy and couldn’t have been fried better.
On paper, these are traditional dishes, but Lasseigne’s presents them with such Cajun flair, it’s hard not to feel right at home. If you’re in the market for great local and fresh food, Lasseigne’s is definitely a crowd pleaser.
Lasseigne’s American Grill is at 7520 Perkins Road, and open Monday-Thursday 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday-Saturday 11 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
