Fast Break: Christina’s Restaurant serves up a hearty house breakfast

For something dubbed “the most important meal of the day,” it sure gets forgotten a lot.

People tend to skip out on the “meal” part, instead grabbing a protein bar or a Pop-Tart and calling it breakfast. Thanks to Christina’s Restaurant, I can finally tell my mother that I did in fact eat my breakfast—a real one.

The restaurant stands out on its Beauregard Town corner with a bright red awning all around the front of the building. When you walk into the restaurant, you know you’re in for a treat. It’s got that old fashioned diner style, and you can rest assured that the cooks know what they’re doing.

The breakfast menu has all the familiar favorites, from omelets to breakfast sandwiches, with plenty of sides to choose from. I ordered the house breakfast, which comes with two pancakes, sausage with a choice of patties or links and eggs cooked any preferred way. I went with links and scrambled eggs, and I added an extra pancake and some bacon on the side for good measure.

The highlights of this breakfast were the perfect pancakes. They were big—really big. In fact, I’m sure they were larger than my head. The pancakes were thick, yet light and fluffy. It might’ve taken me an hour to eat them, and I savored every second.

The sausage links were packed with a ton of rich flavor, as was the crisp bacon, and neither were overly greasy. Soft, feathery well-seasoned scrambled eggs punctuated this hearty breakfast.

If I’m ever in the neighborhood, I won’t be missing out on breakfast at Christina’s. It’s just like mom used to make.

Christina’s Restaurant also serves a large lunch menu of salads, sandwiches, poboys and daily specials. The restaurant is at 320 St. Charles St. and is open Monday-Friday 6 a.m.-3 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Breakfast is served from opening to 11 a.m. Monday-Wednesday and 6 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Thursday and Friday, with breakfast all day Saturday.
